Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, originally named Bomunsa Temple, was founded in the 5th year of King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty (1374) by the venerable Naong Hyegeun. Its most distinctive feature is its extraordinary location—unlike most Korean temples nestled deep in the mountains, Yonggungsa Temple stands majestically on a coastal cliff overlooking the blue East Sea, making its beauty even more breathtaking. It is also famous as a sunrise viewing spot, where many people gather on New Year's Day to greet the first sunrise and make wishes.
According to legend, during the Goryeo Dynasty, a severe drought caused great suffering to the people. The venerable Naong Hyegeun prayed earnestly at this location. One night, the Dragon King appeared in his dream and instructed him to build a temple on the mountainside and pray, promising that the drought would end. Following the Dragon King's revelation, the venerable Naong Hyegeun built the temple here, and as the legend says, the drought indeed subsided. This is why the temple's name includes "Yonggung," meaning "Dragon Palace."
Yonggungsa Temple has faced trials throughout its long history. It was unfortunately destroyed during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century. However, it was rebuilt in the early 1930s by the venerable Unkang. Since then, it has undergone several renovations and expansions to reach its current beautiful state. In 1974, when the venerable Jeongam became the head monk, the temple's name was officially changed to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.
